Stacks supports a variety of search methods that you can make available to your users/patrons, this includes:
- EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) searching
- External catalogs (outbound searches)
- ILS searches (if you have an integration setup with Stacks)
- Multi-search (Bento)
- Stacks website searches (SDS)
This article will explain how to configure the search experience your users/patrons will see when using the primary search bar.
Refer to the Integrations section of the user guide for more information on preparing EDS, search integrations, and outbound searches before continuing with configuring the search settings discussed here.
Configuring the Search Settings
Users with the Administrator role can configure the setting associated with the appearance and functionality of the search bar.
- From the Dashboard, click the Search Configuration tile
- Click the Settings tile
- Scroll through the list and check the box under the 'Enabled' column to the left of each search type you wish to enable for your users
- Click and drag the 4-way arrow icon beside the enable box to re-order the display of the selected search options your users/patrons will see

Default Search on Form, select the search type that will be the default search
- Users can still select other search types (if more have been enabled)
- Important! Use caution when selecting the default search as this field will list all search options, including those not enabled as described above

Style, select the style in which you wish to display the search options, choose from:

Horizontal tabs
- If selected, additional styling options are available for configuring the appearance of these tabs via the Style Editor
- Dropdown
- Radios

Limiter Style, select the format used to select limiters (if applicable), choose from:
- Dropdown (this is the default option)
- Radios

Results per Page, set the maximum number of results to be displayed per page
- Page numbers, Next, and Last options will appear at the bottom of the page to navigate between the page(s) of results

Authors Display Limit, set the number of authors to be displayed in the results
- When a search result value is clicked, the full list of authors, if there is more than this limit is set to, will be displayed
- Show Embed Button, check this box to add an Embed button to the search form, this will allow users to copy a snippet of code to embed the search form on an external site
- Click Save All Changes, to save the search settings configuration
Additional Settings
For each of the enabled search types described in the instructions above, additional options can be configured such as:
- Editing the label displayed to your users/patrons
- Enabling the bento search
- Enabling a tooltip
- And more depending on the search type
Begin by:
- Scroll to the search type, click the Edit button on the far right
- In the window that opens
- Display Label, if needed, edit the label (name of the search type) that will be displayed to your users/patrons

Search Page Dropdown
- Select the Bento page that will be displayed when the bento search option is used
- If more than one bento page has been created, the checkbox below can be enabled to allow users/patrons the option to select which bento search page to view
- This option is only available when editing the Bento search type
- Select the Bento page that will be displayed when the bento search option is used

Show Search Page Dropdown, check this box to enable a drop-down which will allow users/patrons to select from different bento pages (if you have created more than one)
- This option is only available when editing the Bento search type

Enable Advanced Search, check this box to enable the advanced search option
- This option is only available when editing the EDS search type
- Enable Bento, check this box to enable the search type to be displayed on a bento result page

Tooltip Text, enter 'helper' text to provide a brief description or instructions for users/patrons
- The text entered here will appear when a user/patron hovers over the search type
- Click Save when finished
